On Friday, January 13th, Belen and Columbus’s Junior Varsity and Varsity basketball teams played each other again in their annual rival game. As expected, both schools had a big showing of fans supporting them at the University of Miami’s Watsco Center. Father Willie led both schools in prayer before beginning each game. Both Belen teams were led by new coaches, and the players were anticipating a strong performance.

The Wolverines’ JV team beat Columbus with a final score of 57-48. The team was led by Danny Sueiro with 27 points. Also contributing was Andre Rodz with 8 points followed by Joaquin Novoa and Mario Cobo with 7 points each. The varsity team also defeated Columbus with a score of 48-42. The team was led by Marcos Dajer who had 13 points and JC Carrillo who had a double double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. This is the second year in a row that the varsity team beats Columbus, and they’re just getting started.

Our school may have won both games, but that wasn’t the only highlight of the night. The senior section, whose theme was all camouflage, was alive and ready for the match-up as much as the players were. The section was filled with endless chants and screaming through all four quarters. Some of the Watsco Center’s staff even complemented them on the endless effort to encourage their team.

In the end, whether it was the two wins, or the student section, this year’s Belen vs. Columbus basketball game was one to remember.
